Chy Carne – Camping in Cornwall
Cornwall in the United Kingdom is one of those places you simply fall in love with. I lived there on and off for over a year and it never lost its magic. In later years I camped at a campground the name of I can no longer remember, but it may even have been Chy Carne in a former guise. Visiting Cornwall, it is hard not to travel back though time with romantic images of smugglers silently at work amongst the dark cliffs of the wild and rugged coastline. Visiting one of the small fishing villages like Polperro, Cadgwith or Mousehole you get similar feelings – has the world stopped turning? You can find out so much about the times gone by by chatting to the locals – perhaps down at the ‘local’. Right, if I have whetted the appetite enough, what about camp grounds? Well you won’t go far wrong with Chy Carne..
Chy Carne is ideally situated as a base to discover the many attractions that Cornwall has to offer. It is just a short distance from Lizard point, and overlooks – and has easy access, to Kennack sands. On the other hand it is the kind of place you might choose to just simply sit back and relax. There are several acres of camping sites or pitches – many with sea views. Of these 54 of them are level camping or touring pitches complete with power. The remaining pitches are not powered and some may have a gentle slope (make sure you keep your head above your feet if camping!).
With Chy Carne being a family run affair you would expect the kind of features included here but the owners have gone to great lengths to make this place one of the best family oriented and pet friendly campgrounds around. The kids will never be short of things to do. Kennack sands is a ten minute walk away, and at low tide there are many rock pools to explore. Outdoor games include table tennis, pool, fotball table and skittle alley – and don’t forget the pirate ship. There is an indoor games room too with air hockey, a pool table, and arcade games. This also boasts Wi-Fi access to BT OpenZone.

The ameneties include a modern well appointed shower block that includes free hot showers, toilet tissue, hand soap, and electric hair dryers. There is a seperate laundrette with large washing machines and dryers, and even a washing up area to wash the dishes. A recent addition is a 125sq metre canvas marquee – always good when the weather plays up. It is illuminated at night and makes a great place to socialise with fellow campers. It can also be reserved for private functions.
Now if you don’t want to camp in tent or your own caravan or motor-home, you can choose to go with self contained accommodation which consists of comfortable four and six berth units located centrally in the tree lined sheltered main grounds.
These units are popular with couples and parents with young children, providing usual home comforts but allowing the freedom to come and go during their holiday.
Chy Carne is an experience – one that you will want year after year, so give it a go, and enjoy. For more information and images, and to read reviews from past visitors go to the Chy Carne website.
