That's a tough one. If you look at any rainfall charts for south queensland you'll find that April is the start of a drier season, but we went in June and though we had good weather for the most part, it rained on the night before we decamped (typical).

@ Rhondda,

Thanks for your comment. To my knowledge Takarakka is the only place suitable for caravans, but it has lots of space, power and modern amenities. The only other camping area is accessible only on foot at Big Bend which is a 9km hike through the gorge. Regarding times to go, May should be OK but it will get chilly overnight. Best thing to do is call the campground before you venture in. Here is some more information:

Getting in to the campsite is OK. Getting out could be a problem if it rains hard. You have to cross a creek and then immediately head up a steep slope bearing to the right. This can get very muddy (but it's fun!).

Hi
Love your site. I have been looking for info regarding taking our pop top to Carnarvon Gorge and this is the most useful we have found.

We are wanting to go at the end of May 2012 but note that "Terence"above recommended Aug/Sept would be the best time. Could we expect wet weather at this time of year (MAY).

Your advice/recommendations would be most appreciated.

\Oh, one more thing - is Takarakka the best place to caravan stay ?

Kind regards
Rhondda and Len

This is a great place, my parents went there and it sparked a passion for bushwalking. Its fantastic that there are such accessible sites that haven't been ruined. Is there a preferable time of year to go there?

No Mark. Carnarvon Gorge is a National Park so no pets allowed. You've always got the abundant native wildlife though, and it is a great place to camp and see.
