Managing Your Camping Hoses
Here’s a quick tip for you. How many times have you wrestled with your potable water hose, and your grey water hose when making or breaking camp? I see people struggling all the time, but some of them try to combat that by using hose reels that unfortunately take up a lot of space. And what about all those extra fittings that you might need when you find that the faucet fitting doesn’t quite match what you have. Also, you might have the problem of water leaking into your boot/trunk from hoses that were not completely drained.
Here is the answer. A simple cheap plastic washing up bowl!
Wind your water hose into the bowl. When you want to roll it out to connect to the faucet, do this. Take the bowl over to the standpipe. Connect one end of the hose. Now take the bowl back to your rig by spinning the bowl on the ground and letting out hose as you go. No kinks in the hose and whatever was surplus to requirements is kept within the bowl
When you decamp, turn the water off (of course), then reverse the action, winding the bowl back to the standpipe and feeding the hose effortlessly back into the bowl. Any surplus water releases into the bowl which you can drain with an easy tip on the side, or better still drill a few small holes into the bottom of the bowl and let it drain before you secure it in the boot/trunk.
As for the grey water hose, I wind it up as normal and place on top of the water hose in the bowl. Again, any surplus water can easily be drained out. The bowl can be easily carried too and stowed in the boot/trunk of your caravan/RV. In our case I have attached a couple of rope handles to the sides of the bowl.
I always carry a selection of extra plumbing fittings with me and these I store in a plastic screw-top container that also resides in the bowl, in the middle of the hose coil. All in one place and easy-peasy to deploy – simple!
