    Atherton Woodlands Tourist Park

Atherton Woodlands Tourist Park is situated on the cool Atherton Tablelands in far north Queensland west of Cairns. It is a member of the BIG4 Holiday Parks and therefore has to achieve and maintain high standards. Situated where it is, it is just a short drive from all of the major attractions of the tablelands. These include Lake Tinaroo, coffee plantations and wineries, and a spectacular waterfall tour.

The owner calls the park his little piece of paradise – paradise that he is happy to share with whomever drives through the park entrance. The park is one of the best kept we have seen – immaculately manicured gardens that blend in effortlessly with the natural wooded surroundings. Whenever we go camping I always measure a campground largely by its amenities blocks. I wish they were all as good as those at Woodlands – spacious, clean and complete with little extras that make your day. A recent addition to the park is an authentic Balinese cabana complete with spotless electric barbecue and comfortable seating. This is situated alongside the pool area and is illuminated along with the pool each night.

The park has a variety of self contained cabins and villas if you are not up to camping; but if you are, you can opt for a basic camping site or powered site which can take anything from small tents to the larger RVs. Both the fully equiped camp kitchen (a mis-nomer, it’s luxurious) and the beautiful salt water pool are spotlessly clean. If you are a dog lover then I’m sorry but you will have to leave Fido at home this trip, and this rule is in place I believe to protect the abundant wild life that also calls this place home.

My wife and I recently returned to Woodlands for the third time after spending another memorable ‘chill-out’ weekend. On this occasion one of the local TV stations was filming for a popular holiday series of documentaries and we were fortunate in being chosen as two of the ‘extras’.

If you are touring Australia, and in particular Tropical North Queensland, you just cannot give this place a miss. If you are not camping, then stay in one of the fully contained cabins – you won’t regret it. Woodlands have a great web site providing much more information. Don’t forget to take the virtual tour that morphs day into night!
